72 Hours in Orlando Visited 9/10-9/13 3.5 Forks

Ocean Prime  7339 W Sand Lake Rd., Orlando, FL 32819

I'll keep this short and sweet because it's Orlando and let's be honest, there's not that much to write about here.  In fact, I'm not even going to review the other places I went to for dinner during the trip because that's how unmemorable they were and not worth my time.  Plus they were group dinners, so those are usually not indicative of the general experience.

I had just gotten off the plane from Italy and turned around and headed straight to Orlando to meet my team for our annual America's meeting.  We were staying near Universal Studios and as I've mentioned before, most of the places in the city are big chains catered to tourists.

Ocean Prime is also a big chain but it's slightly more upscale than a Margaritaville or TGI Fridays.  It's a steak and seafood house so they have a pretty decent line up of food options - steaks, sushi, crab cakes, etc.  I wasn't super hungry so I got the Cobb Salad ($22) while the rest of my team indulged in a 3 course meal for only $35, not bad and under budget!  The cobb salad was fine but it was mostly iceberg lettuce and the bacon was overly sweet but it had a decent line up of shellfish and other seafood.  I didn't try my team's 3 course meals but it included a steak which they all seemed to enjoy and the dessert was a huge hunk of chocolate cake.

Overall, it was actually a slightly above average meal that you would expect from a larger chain restaurant.  I would gladly come here again vs. going to a Hooters any day of the week.  If you're tight for budget, the 3 course meal is definitely the way to go!

Paddlefish Visited 3/28/2018 3 Forks

Paddlefish  1670 E Buena Vista Dr., Orlando, FL 32830

Lord help me if I ever have to be in Orlando ever again if I don't have children.  I haven't been to Orlando in years (since I was a kid) but found myself there for a work conference in the middle of spring break.  It was literally my worst nightmare - packed with people, screaming children everywhere and nothing that wasn't a chain restaurant or fast food joint within 50 miles.  But the weather was great!

Like I said, I was there for a work conference and one of our suppliers graciously gave us $75 to spend on dinner on our own at Disney Springs - this mega mall complex that reminds me a bit of Vegas.  We were to try to coordinate with others at the conference to have dinner together but the place is so spread out and huge that a few co-workers and I just scooted off ourselves for dinner.  The place is filled with kid friendly places like the Rainforest Cafe but we managed to find Paddlefish which seemed like it was a bit more quiet and adult friendly.  The wait was over an hour for dinner but we managed to grab 3 seats at the bar.  As you would expect, the menu is seafood focused which worked for me.  Since this is Disney related, the prices were all pretty inflated - in fact they are pretty on par with NYC prices which was not surprising but still annoying.  We split the calamari ($16) because we were starving and then I decided to get linguine and clams ($26) because I normally don't get it when I'm out.  I should call out that the bread they serve you in the beginning is actually pretty good - it was a warm parker-like roll and served with sweet honey butter.  We asked for 2 orders of it - carbs be damned!  The calamari was pretty decent for what it was - it was nicely battered and not too greasy.  As for the pasta, it was totally fine as a pasta with clams.  It was a bit oily but there were a good number of clams and tons of garlic which makes everything better.

Overall, it was a perfectly fine meal for being trapped in a mega mall.  The bartender was quite nice and friendly so that was a plus.  I know I'm being a bit harsh for ragging on this place but I'd think that even for parents they breakout in hives when they think of taking their kids to Disney/Orlando - it's definitely not a relaxing vacation.  I'm glad Delta paid for our meal, otherwise I would definitely be annoyed that I paid $60 for a such basic meal.  Total bill:  $60 with tax, tip and a beer

The Continental Miami Visited 11/17/2015 4.5 Forks

The Continental Miami   2360 Collins Ave, Miami, FL 33139

I have a love/hate relationship with Stephen Starr restaurants.  He's definitely a prolific restaurateur with awesome places like Upland but then he's got terrible places like El Vez and painful trendy places like Buddakan.  But I was curious as to what he had going on in the Miami scene, so I decided to check out The Continental while in town.  The Continental has a very retro 70's upscale diner feel to it.  It's kind of kitschy with a tikki cocktail menu but then the food is weirdly Asian and slightly Caribbean.

I went with Laura and one of her trade association colleagues.  We sat outside which is one of the best things about Miami - you can always sit outside and enjoy a good meal.  Our waiter was super friendly and nice and recommended a bunch of things for us to share.  We started with a basic organic green salad ($10) which was nice since Laura and I had been eating a lot of hotel conference food all week.  Based on the rec of our waiter, we got the lettuce wrap ($29), Jamaican Jerk Chicken ($24) and the Pastrami Fried Rice ($16).   The salad was very standard - basic fresh mixed greens with a lemon vinaigrette.  Next came the fried rice which the waiter raved about - he said it was super unique and different because of the pastrami element and heavy black cracked pepper on it.  In all honesty, I've totally had some similar to this somewhere else and I just don't get the trend of using pastrami.  But the actual fried rice part was quite tasty in that salty fried rice way.  Next we had the lettuce wraps and this was an amazing dish.  Incredibly tender and juicy Korean marinated skirt steak with kimchi, pickles and a spicy (sambal?) garnish with very large and fresh pieces of Bibb lettuce. It was fantastic and jam packed with lots of flavor and heat.   The other main dish of jerk chicken was equally as tasty (see what I mean about a totally random menu?).  The chicken was super moist and tender and served with traditional rice and peas.  Awesome dish even if it was kind of a random item. The waiter definitely steered us in the right direction.

Of course, we had to get dessert and got the millionaire's chocolate cake ($11) because any dessert with that name is just begging for you to order it, even if you don't like chocolate.  To offset it, we also got the Strawberry Shortcake ($11) because that's one of my favorite desserts.  As expected, I loved the shortcake much more.  It was the perfect blend of shortcake, creme fraiche and sweet sugar soaked strawberries.  This is totally my kind of dessert - still sweet but not rot your tooth sweet.  You can find that kind of sweetness with the chocolate cake - it was waaay too much for me.  I took one bite and while I fully appreciated it for what it was, I couldn't eat more than 1 bite.

While I didn't love this place as much as I did Upland, it was a very solid Stephen Starr representation.  Even though the decor is kind of cheesy and the menu may not make a lot of sense, you'll have a great time and leave with a happy and full stomach.  Total bill:  $250 for 3 people

The Bazaar Visited 11/17/2015 4 Forks

The Bazaar  1701 Collins Ave., Miami Beach, FL 33139

I hadn't been to Miami in years so I was excited to spend some time down there for a few days for work in December.  Unfortunately the conference I was at was in Hollywood, FL which is about 40 minutes away from South Beach but it's a super cheap Uber ride away, so it was definitely worth the hassle to to head down there.  Laura, Jen and I decided to head out of Hollywood since there's nothing to do there and opted for dinner at The Bazaar, a Jose Andres establishment.  Funnily enough, he's a huge name in the DC food scene yet I've never actually been to any of his restaurants before, so I was glad to check this place out.

It's located in the ever so chic SLS Hotel - a typical South Beach hotel right off the beach with a modern and trendy interior and equally modern and trendy clientele.  The menu here is split up into 3 sections of tapas:  Miami Meets the World which is a fusion of Miami and Asian food; Spain Yesterday which is more traditional Spanish food; and Spain Today which is Spanish food with a more modern slant.  Our waiter suggested about 8-9 dishes so we tried to pick something from each section:  from the Miami Meets World section we got the Bao Con Leche ($18), Dragon Fruit Ceviche ($17), and Brussels Sprouts ($10); from the Spain of Yesterday and Today we got the Fish en Papillote ($22),  Seared Scallops ($16) and Croquetas de Jamon ($13).  There were a bunch of other great sounding dishes but we were also saving room for dessert.  Our waiter was super nice and very helpful in navigating us through the super extensive menu.

The Bao Con Leche is their version of steamed pork belly buns and it was quite tasty and satisfying. To be honest, I'm not really sure what the fusion part of this dish was as it seemed like a pretty straight forward pork bun to me.  Next we tried the croquetas de jamon - they were small bite size fritters made with delicious Iberico ham on the inside.  I would have preferred a bit more cheesey goodness on the inside but it was a great snack to pop in your mouth.  The 3rd dish was the Dragon Fruit Ceviche, which is one of their signature dishes.  It's super unique - they carved out half of a dragon fruit and served it with raw tuna, lemon, hibiscus and some dragon fruit foam on top.  I was a bit unsure of this dish at first but after a few bites I found it to be super refreshing and definitely something I've never had before.  The dragon fruit is light, mild and crunchy which was a good pairing with the tuna.  The brussels sprouts were your typical roasted version - tasty but definitely something that I could make on my own at home.  The main dishes were the fish en papillote (basically steamed fish wrapped in paper) and the seared scallops.  The fish was presented in dramatic fashion with 2 waiters coming to "unwrap" the fish but taste wise it was pretty mild and kind of boring - it was a nice and tender white fish.  The scallops were served with toasted pine nuts and while they were seared nicely and large in size, there were only 2 of them which was disappointing.

We saved room for dessert and went for the s'mores chocolate cake ($12) and the key lime pie ($12). As many of you know, chocolate is not my favorite dessert but when it's described as chocolate cake served with toasted marshmallow, caramelized bananas, and peanut butter ice cream, it's hard to say no to that.  As delicious sounding as it was, it was just too rich and decadent for me, especially after having snacked on a bunch of rich and heavy dishes earlier.  As for the key lime pie (we had to order it since we are in Florida after all), it was a deconstructed version with all the different components splayed out on the plate separately.  It was sour, delicious and definitely reaffirmed that I'm much more of a fruity non-chocolate dessert gal.

Overall, this was a fun Miami style dinner.  It's great people watching, lovely service and unique food.  It is a bit pricey given the amount of food served but it is South Beach, it's right on the main drag of Collins Ave, and tapas style, so it's to be expected that you'll pay a bit more.  Total bill: $102/pp with tax, tip and drinks

Johnny V Visited 2/23/2014 4 Forks

Johnny V 625 E Las Olas Blvd, Ft Lauderdale, FL 33301

On our last night in Fort Lauderdale, the girls and I decided to go out to a fancy pants dinner in the heart of Las Olas Blvd.  I had heard that the chef was on Top Chef so that made me even more excited, but upon further research he was on Iron Chef America - still not bad but not as big of a deal to me.  In any case, this place is a bit on the higher end of restaurants in Ft. Lauderdale - it's definitely not your regular beach bar hang out.

Unfortunately we weren't able to get a table on the sidewalk and had to sit in the back, which was kind of dark and quiet but it ended up being fine.  The menu has a pretty big surf and turf feel to it with lots of seafood dishes, meat dishes and seafood and meat combination dishes.   Not much for vegetarians unless you just want to have a salad.  We opted to split the poke ($14), duck meatballs ($13) and the Thai bbq lamb ribs ($15).  Krush and I are both obsessed with poke and while this one was totally fine it wasn't the same as the kind you get in Hawaii (what is really?).  The duck meatballs were made with pesto, pine nuts and a demi glaze on top and served on a bed of portobello mash.  The were pretty flavorful and the mash added a nice touch to it to keep it moist.  The bbq ribs had a red curry vinaigrette coating and fell off the bone pretty nicely.  It was a bit too dry on the outside for me but that is probably due to the crushed pistachios on the outside of the ribs.  While it didn't seem like we ordered too many appetizers, we were all pretty full so that by the time our entrees came out, most of us could barely finish our meals.  I was torn between ordering the yellowtail snapper, surf and turf or the scallops - even though I love scallops I usually don't order them in restaurants because I find them totally overpriced but for some reason I was drawn to this one because it also came with beef short rib, truffle mashed potatoes and chilled lobster salad ($38).  How could I turn down scallops, short rib, mashed potatoes and lobster salad in one dish?!  I've come to expect scallop dishes in restaurants to be pretty sparse, so when my dish came out and there are one 2 pieces of scallop I wasn't surprised but still a bit disappointed.  But after eating the extremely rich and hearty dish, I now know why they only had 2 pieces - you won't be able to eat more than 2.   The scallops pieces were quite large and seared just right so that they weren't overcooked.  The dish was one giant decadent variation on surf and turf.  They used a particularly heavy hand of butter on the mashed potatoes (surprise surprise) which was a bit too much for me.  I was a bit let down by how small of a portion the lobster salad was  - it was a very tiny bite of cold lobster with a bit of mayo and celery but I'm guessing they probably would have charged more if they had a larger portion.  I would have been happier with more lobster and less short rib just to lighten up the dish a bit.  The other girls got surf and turf and mahi mahi dishes and they all looked delicious if not also very heavy and a bit overwhelming after all our cocktails and appetizers.

Johnny V's is definitely a nicer end establishment in what is essentially a beach town.  The prices were a bit high than what I would expect for Fort Lauderdale but the portions and ingredients used were large and top notch.   If it's possible, I would recommend trying to get a table outside on the sidewalk so that you can people watch because being put in the back room isn't quite as festive but if you're with a good group of people, it doesn't really matter so much.  Total bill:  $97/pp with drinks, tax and tip

Timpano Italian Chophouse Visited 2/21/2014 3.5 Forks

Timpano Italian Chophouse 450 E Las Olas Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301

  • The girls and I took a well needed break from the cold and headed down to FL for some sun and fun. Jill's parent's condo is right off the main drag of Las Olas in Fort Lauderdale so there are tons of great dining options within walking distance.  Timpano is literally downstairs and for happy hour they have 1/2 price appetizers and drinks - so it was the perfect way to start the night.  The service started out well enough with them being really accommodating by literally carrying tables from across the restaurant so that we could all sit together outside.  Our first (yes, first) waitress was super bubbly and excited to help kick off the night with us.  We immediately ordered a round of drinks and a bunch of appetizers in order to take advantage of the happy hour specials.  We got 2 orders of the black skillet roasted mussels ($6/order for HH), 2 orders of the jumbo lump crabcakes ($8/order for HH), 1 order of the skillet clams ($7 for HH), 2 orders of the meatballs ($4.50/order for HH), 1 order of the calamari ($5 for HH), 2 orders of the shrimp cocktail ($6.50/order for HH) and a Tuscan flatbread ($11).  As you can see, we all love to eat and that's the beauty of hanging out with this crew - you will eat and drink well.
The steaming hot mussels and clams came out first and I was super excited because there is nothing I love more than a good shellfish dish.  I was extremely impressed by how many mussels and clams they give you - especially during happy hour.  The entire skillet was piled high with them.  The mussels were served with olive oil and sea salt.  They were fairly decent sized and most of them were pretty plumb.  My one complaint was that there was too much salt and by the end of the meal I was extremely dehydrated from all the salt I was ingesting.  The clams were served with olive oil, sea salt, rosemary and fresh garlic.   Again, it was very heavy handed on the salt and rosemary.  I would have preferred a cleaner more simple seafood experience but let's be honest, it didn't stop me from gorging on about 20 of them.  The crabcakes came with a roasted red peper bearnaise and arugula.  As someone from MD, I take my crabcakes pretty seriously and these were ok - a bit heavy on the filler and I didn't really get the lump crabmeat experience but it was a decent happy hour serving.  The calamari was your standard bar calamari here too, so no complaints here.  The meatballs came with a healthy dose of marinara sauce on it and it was a great 2-bite happy hour appetizer - I could have eaten at least 3 of them on my own.  As this point, we were all pretty full and 2 cocktails in, so we didn't even really realize that our shrimp cocktail and flatbread didn't show up even though they did bring us fresh plates.

After waiting for awhile, we just told our 3rd waitress (yes, somehow in the process of ordering, getting our dishes and getting the bill we went through 3 different waitresses) that we didn't mind that they didn't send out the shrimp and flatbread, but it would be great if she could just make sure it was not on our bill.  Lo and behold, when our bill came they were on our bill.   I mean, come on.  We had literally just told them 2 seconds to please check.  So we had to track down one of our 3 waitresses to take it off our bill.  Then our 1st waitress came and told us that apparently they delivered our food to the next table and instead of them questioning why they got it, they just ate it!  Then when we got our bill, we noticed that Jenn's credit card was missing and they had only charged 4 of the 5 cards.  The waitress looked at us like we were crazy but then she started looking around and saw that Jenn's credit card was lying on the ground outside the restaurant.  WTF?!

All in all, it was a great happy hour place and super fun place to chill out after a long relaxing day at the pool.  My only complaint was that the service was all over the place and even though I know it's not New York and things go at a slower pace, the combination of the comical service blunders puts this in the 3.5 fork category.   I can't vouch for a non-happy hour experience, but I'd say just try to get there by 7pm and you'll have a great and very affordable night.  Total bill:  $40/pp with drinks, tip and tax

Asia Bay Visited 2/17/2013 3.5 Forks

Asia Bay 1111 E Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301

For our last night in Ft. Lauderdale, the girls and I decided that we should treat ourselves to a nice night out and what better way than to go for sushi? Las Olas is the main strip in Ft. Lauderdale with tons of cute shops and restaurants and Asia Bay was a quick 15 minute walk from the condo.  We had originally called for a 8:30pm reservation and we walked in about 10 minutes late and they didn't flinch at all (this would never fly in NYC).

The menu here is mostly sushi but then there's a bunch of Thai food too.  I'm usually not a huge fan of places that mixes and matches ethnic cuisines but if it's going to be a mix, it might as well be a mix of my two favorite cuisines.  We decided to go family style and went a bit overboard with the ordering.  We started with their famous tuna rock appetizer ($14), the hamachi shiitake sashimi ($19), the steamed mussels ($13) and the yasai itame ($8) for the table.  The tuna rock is what the restaurant is known for and it consisted of chopped tuna, avocado, masago, scallion, spicy mayo sitting on a bed of seaweed salad.  So it was basically tuna tartar.  I loved all the ingredients and had no doubt that it would be a great dish - which it was.  But my one complaint was the presentation of the dish.  To be honest, it kind of looked like cat food.  It was a bit grey and didn't have that dark red look of fresh tuna.  Don't get me wrong, the tuna was totally fresh tasting and the dish overall was great, but looks wise it could have used some work.  The hamachi shiitake sashimi was also great but I didn't think that the shiitake really added anything to the dish.  The dish could have been fine with just the hamachi on its own.  The steam mussels was actually a Thai soup served in a lemongrass and basil broth.  It's a bit hard to share a soup with 8 people, but I managed to sneak a couple sips and the lemongrass really hits you in the face.  The mussels were the green New Zealand mussels that I love but they weren't as big as I've normally seen them, so that was a bit of a disappointment.   As for the yasai itame, it was just a bunch of steamed vegetables and I didn't really get the dish.  It looked and tasted like a plate of veggies that I make at home.

For our entrees, we kind of went buckwild and ordered way too much food.  I got the sashimi appetizer for myself ($13) and then shared the tuna jalapeno roll (it was supposed to be toro but they were out of toro that night.  Boo!  $15), the beauty and beast roll ($11), the rainbow roll ($11), the fuji roll ($16), pad thai with chicken ($16), the pad si ew with chicken ($16) and the sea bass main with ginger sauce ($28).  I had actually ordered two other rolls but luckily the waiter had forgotten to put that order in, which was totally fine because we could barely finish all the food we did have.  The sashimi appetizer was really fresh and totally hit the spot and it almost made me wished that I ordered a sashimi entree.  It came with 3 pieces of tuna, 3 pieces of salmon, and 3 pieces of white fish.  It was the perfect sashimi appetizer.  As for the rolls, they were all quite good and very very filling.  They were all pretty big in size and the quality of all the ingredients were great.  The tuna jalapeno roll had the right amount of heat, the beauty and beast roll was a fantastic combination of eel and tuna (but I could have done without the asparagus in it, I just really don't like my sushi with veggies), the rainbow roll was your usual rainbow roll topped with fresh pieces of salmon, tuna, white tuna and snapper, while the fuji roll was quite unique - it was a tuna roll but it was topped with chunks of avocado, masago, tuna and kimchee sauce.  All the rolls were winners and honestly the menu was full of other really interesting rolls that I would have loved to try but there just wasn't enough time, money or room in my stomach.  I also tried the pad si ew and it's your basic solid broad noodle dish.  We all did comment how it seemed more like a chicken dish with noodles tossed in because there was so much chicken on the dish.  But hey , at least we got our money's worth!  The sea bass was cooked nicely and tossed with mushrooms, onion, bell peppers, pineapple, and scallions.  The pineapple was an interesting touch and I didn't mind it, but it wasn't an amazing addition.  By the end of the meal, I felt like I needed to be rolled out of the place so I was so happy when they "forgot" our last 2 rolls even though they sounded amazing and were actually the ones that I had ordered for the table.

All in all, it was a great and enjoyable meal.  The service was super friendly even when Noa complained about not enjoying her drink, they gave her another drink with zero attitude.  I was surprised a bit at the prices (one of the rolls on the menu was even $25) and thought they were a bit high for Florida but it was worth the splurge for a nice night out with everyone.  I did dock 1/2 fork for overall presentation but rest assured, the flavors and ingredients are still worth it.  Total bill: ~$60/pp with tax and tip.

Beach Bunnies Visited 2/17/2013 2 Forks

Beach Bunnies 411 S Fort Lauderdale Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304

Ok, so I'll be honest, I don't think the name of the place we actually ate at was called Beach Bunnies. But the name of the place on my receipt seems to refer to a place that doesn't exist anymore and the place we did eat at did share the same menu as Beach Bunnies so I'm just going with this name.  But that should have been a bad sign right?

The girls and I were in FL walking around the boardwalk strip area starving and looking for a good brunch place.  Apparently people in Fort Lauderdale don't really do brunch or at least not by the beach.  After walking around aimlessly for a while and slowly getting hungry and cranky, we picked a place that had the most outdoor space in the sun.  When we sat down the waitress gave us two different menus telling us that we can order food from both places.  So all the food was coming out of the same kitchen and honestly the menu was pretty much of the same so it was all confusing.   One of the reason we picked this place was because they had a breakfast menu. The menu also had a variety of salads, sandwiches, burgers, fried seafood baskets, randomly a bunch of gyros, and also ribs.  So it was just a mish-mosh of totally random things.  Some of the girls got excited by the fact that we could order breakfast but sadly the waitress informed us that they were no longer serving breakfast.  I was kind of annoyed by this as they should have put the breakfast hours on the menu or told us when we sat down.  It's kind of bad to set expectations for customers but only to dash their hopes when they try to order.  In the end, I went for a Greek Salad with shrimp ($14) because I had been eating tons of crap on vacation so thought it would be good to go a bit healthy.

We then proceeded to wait forever for our food.  Good thing we had ordered drinks beforehand.  I should also mention that most of the mixed drinks were pretty awful here.  A few of the girls ordered Bloody Marys and they mentioned that it tasted like Campbell's tomato soup with some vodka.  The drink looked super thin and watery so I wasn't surprised by  it.  The strawberry daiquiri that Jill and I got tasted like a frozen drink with almost no alcohol in it.  The winner of the day was the mimosa mostly because it came with its own mini bottle of champagne.  When we ordered our 2nd round of drinks the waitress mentioned that they ran out of glasses and had to serve our drinks in plastic cups.  WTF?  It was only 2pm on a Saturday, how could they already be out of clean glasses? Another service gripe was that Kristin tried to order an orangia and the waitress was like "what is that?" and Kristin had to point out that it's the orange drink in the refrigerator.  Really? Then when we ordered a 3rd round of mimosas the waitress told us that they ran out of champagne.

Finally when the food came out, I was actually a bit surprised by how decent my salad was.  April had mentioned that when she went to the bathroom and got a glimpse of the inside of the restaurant that it looked like a run down Subway Sandwich joint (we all agreed after seeing it for ourselves). So we weren't expecting too much food-wise.  Surprisingly,  my salad was pretty fresh and dressed well with a light dressing.  I just disappointed at the size of the shrimp served with the salad.  I was about 1/2 the size I expected here (and no, I wasn't expecting jumbo shrimp here just ones that weren't so shriveled).  The salad came with a side a taziki and pita that I found quite enjoyable and a great supplement to my greens.  The sweet potato waffle fries were ($4) great and I wished more places offered this as a fry option.  Everyone else's food seemed pretty decent, not great, but we were just happy to have had food and lots of drinks in our belly.

When it came time pay our bill, we all put our credit cards down and the waitress took the check away for a while.  She then came back 15-20 mins later to tell us they didn't take Amex.  It was a bit frustrating that it took her 20 minutes to tell us that.   Finally, after another 15 minutes (and almost 3 hours after we sat down to eat), we were able to pay our bill ($32/pp with tax and tip).  My gripes are more service related but if you go in expecting that the food is your standard beach/bar food then you probably won't be too let down.  I'm not sure if there are really that many other better beach side restaurants, but I would definitely research your options before settling on a place to eat.
